Teaching Philosophy

I believe that every classroom should be an intellectually and physically safe environment. In my classroom, students will be able answer questions, contribute to discussions, and share their own experiences without the fear of embarrassment or harassment from others; every answer has value and every contribution counts. The students will learn to respect the strengths and ideas of others and build strong social foundations by cooperating and listening during group projects and during inquiry based activities that will require the contribution of everyone. My students will also understand the importance of safety in the classroom. The students will learn the appropriate procedures ensuring them a safe, hands-on, and meaningful learning experience.

I believe that every student is capable of learning and that the real application of learning takes place outside of the classroom in the students’ everyday lives. I feel that every student possesses a wealth of experience that, when tapped into, allows the child to truly develop a livelong love of learning. For students to grasp the complexities of many educational topics, it is critical for the teacher to make real world connections and scaffold on what they already know; students know much more than they are often given credit. I believe education is living and real and not just about facts and figures; it is something to be respected and not feared. I want my students to leave the classroom appreciating the marvels of the world around them; to think and inquire, to aspire and succeed. I am enthusiastic and passionate about my subject material and I want all students to realize they can succeed in and contribute to their field of interest.

I believe a teacher should model the behavior they expect of their students. My classroom and materials are professional and prepared in advanced, my lessons are relevant and thought provoking, I am always on time and value every minute I am with my students. I want my students to know they are important enough to give my very best and in return they do their best for me. My goal is to teach them to be prepared and professional so they can be successful in all they set out to accomplish in life. I am a teacher who speaks in a polite tone and doesn’t believe in shouting, expressing my frustration or embarrassing anyone. My goal is to model to my students how to have appropriate and professional conversations with not only teachers, but with other students and professionals. I want my students to leave my classroom with a positive attitude by learning how to work through disagreements and frustration in a constructive way.

I believe a teacher must get to know their students. I am a teacher who is capable of building a positive rapport based on respect and trust. I am a teacher who is pleasant and enjoys greeting each student as they enter the room. I enjoy asking them challenging questions as much as asking how their after school actives are going. I am a teacher who attends student events and wants to know how they are doing in other classes. I want my students to be able to tell me when they are confused or frustrated so we can work together to find a method that works for them. Education is about building the student up, not breaking them down.

I am a teacher who believes that there is never a wrong answer, only a wrong question. I am a teacher who expects my students to be actively involved in the education process and I set my expectations high. I encourage my students to participate in discussions, answer questions, and inquire about the subject. A teacher should never miss a invaluable opportunity to help build a student’s self esteem and confidence. I am a teacher who responds to student answers in a way that builds on their prior knowledge, makes meaningful connections to other experiences and or subjects and guides the student along the path of learning. I am a teacher who loves a challenge, encourages hard questions from my students and admits that I will never have all the answers; a teacher will always be a student.
